Overview

K-Gr 6-Susan Hammond's Classical Kids series has produced several high-quality classical recordings for children over the years. However, this release fails to live up to the rest of the series. The poorly written and poorly acted didactic script follows three children who are in danger of being written out of the opera, The Magic Flute. They travel in the opera's magic boat which takes them to Mozart's son Karl, who doesn't appreciate being the son of a famous composer. The four go back in time and witness special events in Mozart's life. Karl gains a better appreciation of his station in life. Many lines are spoken over-the-top in heavy-handed astonishment. The music takes a back seat to the story in this production. Susan Hammond's Mozart's Magic Fantasy and Kimbo Educational's Moving with Mozart (Oct. 1999, p. 90) are better choices.-Rob Reid, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire/Indianhead Federated Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
