CHAPTER 1

Marquise Bookmark

Finished Size

Approximately 1 x 5¼ inches

Materials

• 3 x 8-inch piece 14-count white Aida cloth

• Size 8 pearl cotton: 1 skein dark purple

• Size 22 tapestry needle

• Fabric stiffener

• Basic sewing supplies and equipment

Project Notes

Begin stitching at red or blue arrow on design chart as instructed.

All stitching is done right to left from the marked starting point.

Refer to the General Instructions and Swedish Weave Stitch Guide for weaving techniques.

If left-handed, stitch from left to right from the marked starting point. Reverse all measuring instructions.

Fabric Preparation

It is not necessary to wash and dry Aida cloth before stitching. It will soften as you work on it. If prewashing, zigzag or serge all raw edges to prevent fraying when working on the piece.

Thread Lengths

Cut 3 lengths of thread for each row (1–8).

Stitches

This design uses the straight, slant and twisted loop stitches. Refer to the Swedish Weave Stitch Guide on page 7 for individual stitch diagrams.

Weaving the Design

1. Measure and mark the design starting point 1½ inches up and ¾ inch in from the bottom right-hand corner of the fabric length (Figure 1).

2. Push the needle and thread up from the fabric reverse side through the vertical float closest to the starting mark, leaving about a 6-inch thread tail on the back.

3. Stitch the first design row following the chart and stitching nine design repeats, as shown on the chart.

4. Push the needle and thread to the back. Secure the row beginning and ending thread tails by weaving through four floats and doubling back before trimming. Note: It is very important to secure the thread tails behind the front stitching, making sure the thread tails do not go outside the stitched area since you will be trimming the bookmark to size close to the stitching.

5. Continue stitching the rest of the rows in the same manner referring to the chart. After stitching is done, clip all threads as close to fabric as possible.

Finishing the Bookmark

1. Mark a line two floats away from the design edges all the way around the bookmark (Figure 2). Trim on the line.

2. Use your needle to pull out the threads of one section of floats on all four sides of the bookmark creating a small fringe as shown in the project photo.

3. Press the bookmark and make sure all markings are removed.

4. Apply fabric stiffener to both sides of the bookmark following manufacturer's instructions. Let dry flat.

Project Notes

Begin stitching at red or blue arrow on design chart as instructed.

All stitching is done from right to left from the marked starting point.

Refer to the General Instructions and Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide for weaving techniques.

If left-handed, stitch left to right from the marked starting point. Reverse all measuring instructions.

Fabric Preparation

It is not necessary to wash and dry Aida cloth before stitching. It will soften up as you work on it. If prewashing, zigzag or serge all raw edges to prevent fraying when working on the piece.

Thread Lengths

Cut the following lengths for the indicated design rows:

Rows 1 and 2 3½ lengths light blue each
Rows 3–5 and 7–9 2 lengths light blue each
Rows 6 and 10 2½ lengths light blue each
Swedish knot row 3 pieces, 2 lengths yellow each

Stitches

This design uses the straight, daisy and Swedish knot stitches. Refer to the Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide on page 7 for individual stitch diagrams.

Weaving the Design

1. Straighten the top and bottom edges of the Aida cloth rectangle by pulling a horizontal and vertical thread.

2. Fold and finger-press the Aida cloth rectangle in half lengthwise to mark the center of the fabric.

3. Measure 2¾ inches up from the long bottom edge of the rectangle and mark the horizontal float nearest to the vertical center point (Figure 1). This is the center of the daisy stitch.

4. Weave row 1 thread through the second vertical float to the right of the marked vertical center point at the red arrow on the chart. Pull the thread through the float, right to left, until there is 2–3 inches more length on the right side of the float than on the left.

5. Working from this spot and stitching to the left, weave the bottom section of the first daisy stitch referring to the design chart and the Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide on page 7.

6. Weave four daisy stitch bottom sections separated by seven straight stitches. Finish the left side of row 1 with seven straight stitches referring to the design chart. Remove needle from thread.

7. Turn the fabric and chart upside down. Rethread the needle with remaining row 1 thread and complete the other half of the row. Stitch three daisy stitch bottom sections separated by seven straight stitches to have seven daisy stitch repeats.

8. To weave row 2, start at the right end of row 1 and weave from right to left all the way across the rectangle mirroring row 1 and referring to the design chart and Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide. Leave a 2-inch thread tail at the beginning of the row. Row 2 straight stitches will be woven through the same floats as row 1.

9. Weave the row 3 thread length through the first float to the left of the vertical center at the blue arrow on the design chart. Pull the thread through the float, right to left, until there is an even amount of thread on either side of the float.

10. Weave row 3 shown in the design chart ending the row with straight stitches.

11. Remove needle from thread. Turn the fabric and chart upside down. Rethread the needle with remaining row 3 thread and complete the other half of the row.

12. Continue stitching rows 4–6 and 7–10 as shown in the design chart.

13. To weave the Swedish knots at the center of the daisy stitches, turn the rectangle wrong side up. Note: The Swedish knot is an exception to the general rule that stitches are created by running the thread under the floats on the front of the fabric. The thread for this stitch runs through the floats on the back.

14. On the back and starting at the far right, pull the thread through a few floats to secure the thread. Turn fabric right side up and push needle and thread up from back just below the center horizontal float of the daisy stitch referring to the design chart.

15. Refer to the Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide on page 7 and wrap the thread around the float three times.

16. Push the thread back through the cloth to the wrong side and weave the thread through the floats to the center of the next daisy stitch, referring again to the Swedish Weaving Stitch Guide.

17. Repeat steps 14–16 to the end of the row. Remove needle from thread. Turn the fabric upside down. Rethread the needle with remaining Swedish knot row thread and complete the other half of the row.

18. Secure the thread at both ends of the row and press. Note: If you have used the Frixion pen, you will need to again mark the center of the piece for jar cozy assembly.

Assembling the Jar Cozy

1. Measure the circumference of jar being used (Figure 2).

2. Mark a stitching line half the circumference measurement away from either side of the vertical center of the jar cozy rectangle (Figure 3).

3. Mark and trim the top edge of the rectangle 1 inch above row 10 of the design (Figure 4). Check that row 1 is 1 inch above the bottom edge of the rectangle; trim if necessary.

4. Finish both long edges of the trimmed rectangle with a narrow machine zigzag stitch or serger using matching thread.

5. Match the marked seam lines and the straight stitches along the short edge right sides together; pin and baste along seam line.

6. Machine double-stitch seam to secure using matching thread. Trim seam allowances to ½ inch (Figure 5). Press open. Finish seam allowances with a narrow machine zigzag stitch or serger using matching thread.

7. Fold the top and bottom edges over ¾ inch to wrong side (Figure 6). Pin in place and press. Note: Check that the design edges are at least ¼ inch from folded edge on front.

8. If desired, use fabric glue to hold the hems in place following manufacturer's instructions.

9. Slide completed cozy over jar and center.
