Growth factors such as IGF-1 play important roles in cardiovascular cell hypertrophy and the response to acute vascular injury. From another perspective, traditional endocrine hormones, such as estrogen, have been found to participate in preventing the development of atherosclerosis in women, acting through novel mechanisms on target vascular cells. Other ‘endocrine' hormones, such as PTHRP and adrenomedullin, also modulate cardiovascular and renovascular dynamic states, suggesting new roles for these peptides as vasodilators. This multi-authored text is dedicated to highlighting emerging and important new information regarding the endocrinology of the cardiovascular system.

This is a multi-authored, up-to-date text examining the impact of various hormonal systems on cardiovascular function, specifically vascular biology. As more research is conducted, the need for a single text that has compiled the results of thousands of studies becomes important. The editors have successfully brought together many experts from multiple disciplines to discuss the state of the art, as well as to share their views for the future avenues of research. The purpose is to present the impact of hormonal systems on cardiovascular function. This worthy objective is met. This book provides an excellent tool for all practitioners and researchers who are interested in issues relating hormonal systems to hypertension, atherosclerosis, vascular injury, etc. A wide range of subject material examining the roles of sex hormones, adrenal hormones, parathyroid hormones, ANP, and insulin on vascular functions is included. The chapters include data from both laboratory research as well as clinical research, providing the link from the bench to the bedside. Especially important are the chapters examining the role of insulin, IGF-1, glucose, and protein glycation on various vascular outcomes. In addition, the chapters examining the interplay of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone pathway and lipids on hypertension provide new insights into the pathophysiology of this common disease. While the editors treat the subjects mentioned with great detail, I think some additional topics could be covered (i.e. PCOS, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular complications). I feel that this text is a useful and needed resource that provides the reader a deeper understanding and appreciation for theroles of hormonal pathways on vascular function.
