This volume marks the beginning of the next phase of Yona's group. They have assembled all dragons and for now, they are not marching straight onto the capital to get Yona her throne back. Firstly, it is because that would be difficult considering the five tribes have lended their support to the current king, Soo-Won, and secondly it is because Yona wants to first see the state of her kingdom by herself before she is locked away in a palace, away from her people. So, they do the next best thing - become outlaw bandits and protect villagers from the harsh Fire Tribe officials. Their actions also gain the notice of the Fire Tribe heir, who sends his younger brother (whom we know from volume 1 as the guy who was trying to woo Yona) to investigate. With the powers of the four dragons and Hak, taking care of a few government officials is hardly difficult. But they also have to spread their resources over many villages, and during one such time when only Yona and Shin-ah are left in the village, a group of real bandits attack. Shin-ah is forced to use his dragon eyes, and we see why he was ashamed of it. It is a terrible power held in the body of such a gentle cinnamon roll, and Yona is able to talk him down and reassure him that she is not scared of him or his powers. (I low-key ship these two, don't tell Hak!) I like their dynamic, and the fact that for Shin-ah she is the most important person. Another thing the plot brings to the front is how helpless Yona feels - we had seen the signs of it in the pirate arc, but now she is even more determined to be a warrior and able to protect others. This volume is quite better than the arc so far, because now it is not just a road-tripping adventure. Now they have goals, people to protect and Things To Do. Even if they do it under a ridiculous name! The humor is still a part of the story, but a bit more seriousness has crept in. And the artwork in this one, especially the parts about the dragon eye power - those were amazing! Overall, a good installment! Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
