Editorial Reviews

DECEMBER 2012 - AudioFile

Charles Todd’s ability to portray the period of WWI is a triumph, and Fiona Hardingham’s quiet, emotionally charged performance brings every detail of this moving love story to life. When newly engaged Lady Elspeth Douglas finds herself trapped in France after the outbreak of war, she defies her family’s expectations and becomes a nurse near the front. There she meets Captain Peter Gilchrist, beginning a journey that will change her life forever. Hardingham’s proper English narration is an excellent contrast to the plucky Scottish brogue she gives Elspeth. Her steady, understated delivery makes the story sound like a personal reminiscence. In addition, her ability to bring the large secondary cast to life adds color to a memorable piece of work. B.E.K. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine
