About the Author

ROBERT FRANKLIN MADDOX is Professor of History at Marshall University./e He is the author of two books, The Senatorial Career of Harley Martin Kilgore and America and World War I: A Selected Annotated Bibliography of English Language Sources with David Woodward. The author of numerous articles and reviews he is a past president of the West Virginia Historical Association.

Historian Maddox ( The Unknown War with Russia , LJ 10/15/77; From War to Cold War , Westview, 1988) has written a balanced and accurate history of America's role in World War II. Unlike Martin Gilbert's The Second World War: A Complete History ( LJ 11/1/89), which focuses on the philosophical differences between the Axis and Allied powers, Maddox concentrates on the political motives and military strategies involved. And while readers will find more detailed descriptions of specific battles and campaigns in John Keegan's The Second World War ( LJ 11/1/89), Maddox's talent lies in providing a condensed history of an incredibly complex and momentous period with enough detail to capture the reader's imagination. An adequate bibliography conveniently follows each chapter, leading the way to further study. Recommended as a college prep or undergraduate textbook and for general history collections.-- C.
