Featuring brand new short fiction from USA Today Bestseller Jaye Wells

Here, every day is Halloween, and the tricks and treats are endless. This collection of three supernatural tales ranging from magical realism to spine-tingling horror is sure to give you lots of chills and thrills.

THE WEREWIFE: One week after she is bitten by the dog-faced boy at a traveling carnival, a mild-mannered housewife gets a sudden, unrelenting craving for raw meat. She doesn't remember eating the cat or running naked through the park under the full moon, but her husband's getting strange calls from concerned neighbors. When he takes her back to the carnival a year later, looking for a cure, it'll either get better...or a whole lot worse. (previously published in the Carniepunk anthology)

THE BLUEST HOUR: A journalist travels to New Orleans to track down the mysterious "Soul Singers"--psychopomps who guide spirits into the afterlife. In this city known for music and its connection to death, a man can learn things he's not ready to know. (previously published in the Fantasy for Good charitable anthology)

THE DEADLINE: An ambitious journalist opens an investigation into the decade's old murder of a priest and a nun at a local Catholic college. She swears she'll do anything to earn her big break, but the price could be her very soul.

About the Author
Jaye Wells is a USA Today-bestselling author of urban fantasy and speculative crime fiction. Raised by booksellers, she loved reading books from a very young age. That gateway drug eventually led to a full-blown writing addiction. When she’s not chasing the word dragon, she loves to travel, drink good bourbon and do things that scare her so she can put them in her books. Jaye lives in Texas.

The Uncanny Collection: Tales of Mayhem and Magic is a compilation ...
The Uncanny Collection: Tales of Mayhem and Magic is a compilation of 3 short stories written by Jaye Wells in one book. I snagged it near Halloween and knew it would satisfy my Jaye Wells addition for a bit. THE WEREWIFE The Werewife started out with me laughing, which is always a great sign. Brad realized what time of the month it was when he got home and knew he forgot to bring his wife the one thing she asked for. You see, Annie was bitten by a dog faced boy at a carnival and ever since then she turns furry once a month. Brad and his wife, Annie have been dealing with this issue for a year before the carnival returns to town. At his wits end, they attend in hopes the curse can be reversed. All is not as it seems, though, and there was a nice little twist at the end. THE BLUEST HOUR This story was fairly short and straight to the point. There's a journalist working on an article about Soul Singers. Soul Singers are people who are able to help souls cross over by singing. He has to find out all about them for his article, so he decides to head to New Orleans. With the help of locals, he is able to find someone to talk to him about the mysterious topic. THE DEADLINE The Deadline is the final short story in this collection. This story is all about Sarah, a female journalist. She's determined to write an article about a local Catholic college and the mysterious deaths that seem to happen in it. She's a bit foolhardy in her dedication, though. When she doesn't get her story one way, she's reckless and that could cost her. All in all, I'd say The Uncanny Collection was a success. My favorite story was The Werewife, while not as spooky as the rest, I liked the length of the story and the twist.

I recently heard someone say, “A story has a beginning, a middle, and … a twist.” If true, bestselling author Jaye Wells is a master at it. In her newly released “The Uncanny Collection: Tales of Mayhem and Magic,” Ms. Wells has written three supernatural tales of the macabre. Known for her award-winning “Prospero’s War” and “Sabina Kane” series, her fans know that where Jaye Wells is concerned, nothing is ever what it seems. The same can be said of these short stories -- be it a traveling carnival, “soul singers” in New Orleans, or a Catholic college. If you like your stories scary with a twist, this collection might have you keeping the light on well after you’ve stopped reading.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: The Werewife: What happens when you have an unhappy marriage, then you add in a little furry murder you get a lot of mayhem and two even more unhappy people. This was a fun little story. I was not sure who I liked and disliked more Brad (husband) or Annie (wife). They both were kinda asshats. But I did enjoy the ending. And I want to know more. I want to know what happened to Brad and Annie. Maybe Ms. Wells will revisit these two in the future. The Bluest Hour: hhmmmm, I am not sure about this one. I was kinda confused as to what was happening. I think I need to re-read this one. The Deadline: Oh man!!! This story is creepy and I wanted more.I didn’t want this story to be so short. I wanted to know what happens next. I want to know what happens to Sarah. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Jaye Wells in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
