The Barnes & Noble Review
Who shall play the boy today? This is the key question for Charlotte (or Charlie) and her twin sister, Elizabeth, the lead characters in Lynsay Sands' entertaining historical. The transformation into a gentleman enables them to escape from their bad-tempered uncle and the loathsome marriages he has arranged. Enter Lord Jeremy William Radcliffe, who insists on escorting "Charlie" and his sister to London. He takes Charlie to a brothel, a gaming den, a shooting range, and an all-night drinking session. Charlie is the braver of the two sisters, rescuing a young woman from the brothel, standing up to bullies, and saving a passel of puppies. Sands has a great time with Radcliffe's confusion, as he is attracted first to "Charlie" on one day and to "Elizabeth" the next. How much fun can one author get out of all this gender-bending? If it's Lynsay Sands, the answer is a lot. She's based an entire romp of a novel on it, and just when you think she can't wring a new trick out of it…she does. Ginger Curwen
