Overview

This introductory book from Tarius Montayj Jones and DazJohnique And'e Jones represents a distinct look at the behavior, punishment contingencies, and psychology that resulted from the institution of slavery. This study combines the English background of Tarius and the Psychological background of DazJohnique to focus on behavioral patterns and ideologies that arose pre-American slavery, during American slavery, and post-American slavery. The application of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is crucial in understanding the framework of white supremacy's creation of a very new, Western classification and dissecting of the slave-master relationship. This work began as more of an observational study and discussion of African American behavioral patterns when dealing with in-group members versus how they react to other races. The goal throughout is to apply clinical terms without becoming too clinical in the writing and explanations while accurately representing each term used; some terms may be modified in order to fit the slave mentality and operation of white supremacy, both of which are redesigned, unnatural, and confusing when placed against a normal thinking society.

About the Author

Tarius Montayj Jones' collegiate journey started off turbulent, taking him three years after graduation to save up enough money to attend Texas Southern University in 2001. He graduated with his B.A. in English (Political Science minor) in 2008 and his M.A. in English in 2012, both from TSU. Incidentally, due to family issues, Tarius had to turn down an opportunity to attend Notre Dame's MFA for creative writing in 2009, thus prompting his graduate journey at TSU. He has published a number of books: Duggan (2013), The Women of Sugar Hill (2014), Black-White Binaries of European Christianity and Colonialism in African and Diasporic Literature (2015), Street Tears (2016), Ghetto Portraits & Things (main contributor-2018), The Slangtionary (main contributor-2019), Street Poems, Vol. I: Rap Poetry (2019), and editor of Unspoken Words From a Daddyless Daughter by Jamaya Walker (2018). Traditional publications include his short story/folktale 'Sans Lake,' in Tales in Firelight and Shadow (anthology), Double Dragon Publishers, ed. Alexis Brooks de Vita, (October 2014) and his poem, 'Love,' in Forever Spoken (poetry collection), ed. Howard Ely, 2007.Montayj's initial goal for majoring in English was to attend law school and further develop his creative writing. After graduation, he was offered a teaching position at TSU in the Fall of 2012. He initially turned the position down, not see teaching as an option, but later accepted the position. This became one of the best decisions he made, finding that he had an unknown passion for teaching and creative writing that outweighed his passion to attend law school.

DazJohnique And'e Jones is from Erie, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Prairie View University with her BS in Psychology in 2017 and is currently finishing up her Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Her scheduled completion is for Spring 2024.She currently works in the field with autistic kids, which is one of her major passions (working with kids). DazJohnique is a student of ABA therapy and practices. She is also dedicated to bringing this aspect of psychology to HBCUs and introducing ABA more into the Black community from a Black perspective.
