About the Author

Together, Harley and Sue Smith have over 30 years of combined experience in the hydroponics industry.

Harley Smith has been a professional hydroponics consultant for more than seventeen years, working with educators, commercial growers and hobbyists across the United States. He has produced educational videos, workbooks and CD’s on hydroponics and related topics, and he has written articles and support materials for hydroponic trade associations. Mr. Smith is a well-known speaker on the topics of hydroponics and biotechnology, putting on professional development workshops for educators at both the state and national levels. He has spent the last 17 years employed with Hydrodynamics International in Lansing, Michigan, with the last 4 years as the Director of Research where he was engaged in new product development for hydroponic plant nutrition. With many years of experience in the hydroponics industry, and with a strong background in marketing and public relations, Mr. Smith has expertise in advising potential business owners on hydroponic facilities setup and hydroponic plant nutritional requirements.

Sue Smith has been in the agriculture industry for over 30 years. Mrs. Smith earned her undergraduate degree in Agricultural Education at the University of Arizona and her Master´s degree at Michigan State University. She spent 15 years as an agriculture educator licensed in the State of Michigan to teach vocational agriculture and science, and is certified to teach Entrepreneurship, Plant Tissue Culture, and Advanced Placement Biology. Mrs. Smith is highly qualified to develop and deliver programs and curriculum in hydroponics and other modern horticultural technologies. She also has experience helping students create and operate successful Community Supported Agriculture groups. Recently, her articles on hydroponics have been published in a variety of industry and health publications, and she is the co-author of The Science of Hydroponics book series written with her husband, Harley Smith.
