Overview

Put yourself in the mental state of 30-year-old Dylann as you read the musically heartbreaking story as she reflects on her life where she uses music as therapy, while she works through the realization of the cycle of abuse that she has been stuck in throughout her life. Dylann acquires and reads the documents from her father, Davin, and her mother, Michele's volatile custody battle, which took place in the Benton County Courthouse and spanned over five years. Dylann reads details about the toxic dynamic of Davin and Michele's relationship, which started in 1989 before Dylann was born. By the time Dylann and her younger brother Nikolaus were born, things reached the boiling point in Davin and Michele's marriage, resulting in the lengthy legal battle that consumed Dylann's childhood. Dylann read saddening observations about the abuse she endured on behalf of her parents that would foreshadow Dylann's teenage years after Davin remarries and has two more children, Evie and Steven. Where Dylann finds herself with an absent biological mother, repeatedly running away from home and bouncing around other family members' houses until graduating and turning 18 years old. Dylann is fighting for a voice and freedom from Davin and her stepmom, Tracy. Dylann eventually finds freedom from Davin and Tracy, but at what cost? Dylann ends up reconnecting with her biological mother. At the same time, Dylann finds herself in love with an abusive young man, Bob. To cope with the three years of physical and emotional abuse from Bob when he wasn't in jail or rehab, Dylann engaged in the risky lifestyle of partying. This lifestyle fueled the already toxic relationship between Bob and Dylann, which eventually led to addictions, assault, and a restraining order.

Grateful to have her life, Dylann and Bob went their separate ways, leaving Dylann to live a drug and alcohol-free life back at her childhood home with Davin and Tracy as well as 3 of her siblings, where she rekindles a relationship with an old friend, Wayne. As Dylann continues to have issues with Davin and Tracy, the relationship with Wayne quickly turns into a shotgun wedding and an instant family since Wayne is a single father to his young son. Wayne and Dylann's marriage reluctantly lasted four years, facing many obstacles regarding Wayne's son until Dylann found herself unhappy with unmet needs. Even after Dylann engages in scandalous behavior, Wayne and Dylann continue to move forward as a married couple, but more or less as roommates who share a sleeping space. Throughout the marriage, Dylann worked at a local pizzeria, King's Pizza, where she crosses paths with Justin Cockburn, and their chemistry is undeniable; this becomes the catalyst that pushes Dylann to face the fact that she can no longer complacently stay in her marriage to Wayne. Justin and Dylann get very close and eventually find themselves in a whirlwind romance that would soon, unfortunately, welcome Davin and Tracy back into Dylann's life.

After a couple of months, Justin and Dylann could no longer deny that they brought out the best in each other; about the same time, they found out they would be parents. The news of the pregnancy was surprising since Dylann, a couple of years before this, had been told by doctors that she would likely be unsuccessful in getting pregnant and maintaining it without the help of hormones. Justin and Dylann were excited to announce to each of their families that they were expecting their first child, defying the odds. Davin and Tracy were over the moon, even driving Justin and Dylann three months before they welcomed their daughter to Idaho to get married. Just two years later and multiple falling outs with Davin and Tracy, Justin and Dylann held their second child, a son. After becoming a mother, Dylann got her hands on the documents from Davin and Michele's legal battle and began her emotional blast into her past. Dylann began to realize other circumstances in her life where she had been abused or taken advantage of. She had felt for most of her life up to that point, whether she was at school, work, or home, as though there was no escaping abuse. Dylann was faced with the harsh reality that she was stuck in a cycle of abuse that her father had started before she was even born. In motherhood, Dylann began to see Parallels between herself and her children, realizing that she had a life-changing and painful decision to make for the sake of herself and her children. She may have been stuck in a cycle of abuse crafted by her parent's actions and words, but it was HER job to get herself out.
