The History of Lambeth Degrees: Sources and Studies brings together some of the principal evidence relating to the character and academic dress of Lambeth degrees, which are awarded by the Archbishops of Canterbury under a statute of 1536. The sources include Francis Gastrell’s eigh teenth century attempt to demonstrate that Lambeth degrees were not the equivalent of university degrees, as well as a series of correspondences to journals in the nineteenth century. There is also a handlist of the principal archival holdings of record offices relating to Lambeth degrees. More modern material includes an account of Charles A H Franklyn’s views on the nature of the degrees as well as contributions to scholarly journals on their character.

William Gibson is Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford Brookes University. He is the author of numerous publications on religion in Britain from 1660-1900. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Historical Society.
