CHAPTER 1

One day a girl was crying at the edge of a quiet forest because she did not have any friends to play with.

Her tears fell on a tiny seed and it started to grow!

The seed grew into a tree. There were not many trees left in the world. Many were cut down. The little girl loved trees and knew that this tree was going to be very, very special.

The little girl thanked God for her new friend and planted him right in front of the forest. She smiled and sang him a special song.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine; you make me happy, when times are grey. You'll always know tree, how much I love thee, I will be with you every day."

After a few days the tree grew as tall as the girl but was very frail. "I am too weak and am going to die" he cried. But the little girl just hugged her friend and told him how handsome he was. She promised to protect him no matter what and sang him their special song.

The little girl kept her promise and took very good care of the frail tree. When the red beetles started to eat at the tree's leaves, the girl would pick them off.

When the rain did not come for days, the girl would walk miles carrying a heavy bucket of water so the tree would not be thirsty.
