Description: When I got this fifth edition to review, I was using the second edition for a quality assurance (QA) class. This is an amazing update with so much more information. Of course, there is much more information on digital modalities and more detail on QA studies for all the modalities. I will use the fifth edition for my class.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach students about QA testing, what tests need to be done and how often — extremely worthy objectives. This is a much-needed book for technologists in training.
Audience: The audience is second-year radiologic technologist students. The book is strictly focused on quality assurance, its testing, and the tools needed for testing. The author is a professor of physics, who is also an RTR who has taken his national boards on QM. Physicists regulate and monitor all the QA testing in a facility.
Features: The book details the principles of quality assurance, how to do all the tests on all the x-ray equipment, as well as ancillary equipment. It defines the tools needed and when and how the tests are to be done. It also provides information on how to monitor a QA program. The best part of this update is the addition of the information on digital modalities, including how to test digital equipment. It also breaks down CR and DR testing. The book has very good images — new, old, and even older ones. Pictures of equipment that is obsolete are good for students who may never have seen them.
Assessment: This is a good quality book with great images. It is extremely useful for new students and even technologists already working in the field. There are not an abundance of QA/QM books that I have found that are appropriate for entry level technologists. I really like this book!

A technologist preparing for the quality management advancedlevel examination will find this book covers it all. The purpose isto provide the most current and comprehensive information available onthe quality management aspects of darkrooms, processing, equipment andaccessories, fluoroscopic and advanced imaging equipment, artifacts,repeat analysis, and silver recovery. Various forms needed fordocumentation of quality improvement activities can be found throughoutthe book with additional forms in the appendix. It would be worthwhile as a review text for all imaging professionalsconsidering the advance registry examination in qualitymanagement. There is a mock quality management registry examination in Chapter 16. Chapters on quality control in advanced imaging equipment (CT, MRI, US,and NM) are also included. Don't hesitate to order this book. Everyradiologic science educator from clinicalinstructor to programdirector should have an understanding of quality improvement withintheir profession. It will bring everyone up to speed, very quickly. Students will have access to all aspects of quality improvement in onetextbook. Radiology departments will appreciate this comprehensivereference. A library within a university or college that houses aradiography program would benefit from the addition of this book to theradiology reference section. This is an excellent book that I lookforward to using in my quality assurance/quality controlcourse.
