Description: This is the second edition of an obstetrics/gynecology quick reference for medical students on the wards.
Purpose: The intent is to provide a quick reference on commonly encountered (and asked) clinical issues on the wards. Although the focus is obstetrics/gynecology, the book covers a lot of medical issues. The objective is to provide handy reference information to medical students, and the book does a solid job.
Audience: Rather than an easy flowing textbook, this is a series of quick factoids, algorithms, and evaluation flow charts, aspects that will appeal to the core audience of medical students. The authors represent reputable programs and there is good feedback from students and residents — the core audiences.
Features: The chapters are brief but contain a lot of good information. For example, in the eclampsia chapter, there is a quick breakdown of the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations. There is then dose information including the data about where the recommendations come from. Other chapters lack dose information, but all contain interesting nuggets. Interested readers should be directed to more definitive textbooks but this pocket reference does its job. I would have updated the ultrasound dating chart based on newer criteria and perhaps include nonviable pregnancy from NEJM, but otherwise the information in this book is solid and brief.
Assessment: Intended for medical students to keep in their white coat pockets, this book provides solid nuggets for those on the go.
