Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self-Discovery

" The Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for understanding more about ourselves. No matter from which point of view we approach it, we discover fresh conjunctions of new and old ideas." So writes Don Riso in this expanded edition of his classic interpretation of the Enneagram, the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. In addition to updating the descriptions of the nine personality types, Personality Types, Revised greatly expands the accompanying guidelines and, for the first time, uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published. This increased specificity will allow therapists, social workers, personnel managers, students of the Enneagram, and general readers alike to use it with much greater precision as they unlock the secrets of self-understanding, and thus self-transformation.

Editorial Reviews
A geometric figure made of nine intersecting lines, the enneagram is thought by some to represent nine basic personality types. These types, as defined here, are the Reformer, Helper (Bill Cosby, Gandhi), Status Seeker (Gary Hart), Artist, Thinker, Loyalist (Joseph McCarthy, Johnny Carson), Generalist, Leader and Peacemaker. If you're a type seven with an eight wing (like Joan Collins), then you're very aggressive and have a strong ego to back your demands. The trouble with this system is that, unlike astrology or numerology, it is speculative which personality type best fits an individual. Once you've established that, you then have to decide if the person in question is Healthy, Average or Unhealthy. Oscar Ichazo, founder of the Arica Institute, reportedly learned about the enneagram from Sufis in Afghanistan. The investigation here broadens Ichazo's framework but still leaves plenty of room for guesswork. Riso is a New Yorkbased enneagram consultant. (September 14)

excellent book!
This enneagram book is the best, it gives a detailed description of each type. After a while, the entire concept is REALLY addictive and u start to analyze everyone! But thats the fun part about it! Im a four wiht a five wing, and just by reading this, I learned SO much about myself, which I have always wanted to do!

Outstanding self-help book
For anyone who is not a mental-health professional, this book is a fantastic chance to peel back the layers of the human psyche (regardless of whether your's, or someone you know.) This philosophy embraced in this book may be regarded as new-age by psychiatrists, but this would be a pitty, it really does work. (and might be an effective way to further help their patients) The book attempts to describe nearly all of the various personality types (not an easy task) and further explains why each personality type is the way it is. Another important thing this book does is to explain the way out of the traps that keep all of us unsatisfied about who we are. Put simply, if you are even remotely struggling with personal issues, and wondering WHY you are the way you are, this book may very well explain EVERYTHING once and for all. It also explains how to overcome those things you do not like about yourself. Most importantly, this book cuts through the lies we tell about ourselves, and shows how strongly we tend to convince ourselves that what we think is wrong with us, is not really the problem. In other words, it exposes the whole ugly truth you have been seeking about what is wrong with you, but refused to believe it. Lastly, this book is extremely useful to get into the head of those you know. For example, you may finally discover why your family members are the way they are. On a personal note, I spent two years working for a control-freak, insanity-inspiring, postal-incident-aggrivating, condescending, boss. This book gave me a clear picture of how the man's mind worked, and shortly put me in controll, allowing me to finally tame the SOB, and to fend off his attacks!!!
