About The Author
James Baldwin was born in 1841 and died in 1925. He was a native of Indiana and was a largely self-educated man. He began teaching at the age of twenty-four. He was promoted to the position of superintendent of all the graded schools in Indiana, a post he held for eighteen years. The last thirty-seven years of his life, he worked with the publisher Harper and Brothers, and later with the American Book Company.
