Among the most recognized buildings in the world, Neuschwanstein was built as a tribute to Richard Wagner and his work, by King Ludwig II of Bavaria on the grounds where ruins of twin medieval castles known as Vorderhohenschwangau Castle and Hinterhohenschwangau Castle. Below the Neuschwanstein lies Hohenschwangau Castle built by Ludwig's father, Maximillian II of Bavaria, as the family's summer residence. The landscape around the castles is among the most spectacular with the gentle Allgu hills, the rugged mountains of the Ammergau, the Lech Valley and the Tannheim Alps framing the area and two lakes, Alpee and Schwanee nearby.
