Description: This is the second edition of a book covering medical conditions midwives may encounter while caring for women from preconception through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This update of the 2009 first edition is appropriate, including new information and an entire section related to obesity.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide midwives and those caring for pregnant women with up-to-date information on medical conditions they may encounter in the women they serve. This information allows midwives to integrate their traditional holistic model of care with medical knowledge to better meet the physiological and psychological needs of their clients as well as recognizing when medical care and referral are needed.
Audience: Both authors are senior lecturers in midwifery at an esteemed university in the U.K. As such, the book directly addresses U.K. midwives and student midwives, but the information is appropriate for midwives and student midwives practicing outside of the U.K. as well.
Features: The book is well written, well organized, and easy to navigate, and provides tables and figures, including color illustrations, that guide and enhance readers' experience. Each of the 12 chapters addresses a medical condition or conditions (such as diabetes, cardiac conditions, and obesity) with an informative introduction followed by physiology/pathophysiology and considerations for preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. The authors address risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as comanagement and referral when necessary. I especially appreciate the discussion of psychological/mental healthcare aspects of caring for patients with these conditions. It speaks well to the midwifery model of care.
Assessment: As a doctorally prepared nurse-midwife practicing in the United States, I found this book informative and engaging. U.K. midwives and student midwives, as well as those practicing in other countries, would find this information relevant to their learning and practice. Due to its length and size, this book would be a convenient reference for those practicing/learning in the field. Updated from the first edition, the book includes more recent references and information, including a new chapter addressing obesity.
