Overview

2002: A military transport on a secret run to dispose of its deadly contents vanishes without a trace. The present: A mass shooting on the steps of the Capitol nearly claims the life of Robert Brixton's grandson. No stranger to high-stakes investigations, Brixton embarks on a trail to uncover the motive behind the shooting. On the way, he finds himself probing the attempted murder of the daughter of his best friend, who works at the Washington offices of the CDC. The connection between the mass shooting and Alexandra's poisoning lies in that long-lost military transport that has been recovered by forces determined to change America forever. Those forces are led by radical separatist leader Deacon Frank Wilhyte, whose goal is nothing short of bringing on a second Civil War. Brixton joins forces with Kelly Lofton, a former Baltimore homicide detective. She has her own reasons for wanting to find the truth behind the shooting on the Capitol steps and is the only person with the direct knowledge Brixton needs. But chasing the truth places them in the crosshairs of both Wilhyte's legions and his Washington enablers.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for Murder at the CDC

“A wild ride with sharp curves, twists and turns. Jon Land has super-charged the iconic Capital Crimes series, merging fact and fiction in this terrific tale that races out of the gate and never lets up.” —Sandra Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Blind Tiger

“A no-holds-barred visionary tale, featuring a vision that’s truly horrifying. Lots more thrillers will be published in 2022, but it’s hard to conceive of one that’s more appropriately timed or societally relevant. Comparisons with other writers in this space are inevitable but Murder at the CDC is better than anything the likes of Tom Clancy or Vince Flynn have ever fashioned, as Land stakes his claim to new turf in this fast, furious, and fantastic thriller.” —Readers Digest

“Jon Land has done well to make The Capital Crimes series his own, while also keeping true to Margaret Truman’s roots. Land has used his fabulous writing style to pull the reader in and leaves them wanting more.”Mystery & Suspense Magazine

“The complicated, traumatic backstories Land constructs for each of his leads never slow the plot, which addresses a host of hot topics such as bullying and school shootings, as it races to a cinematic conclusion. Political thriller fans will be pleased.” —Publishers Weekly

“While Murder at the CDC honors Margaret Truman’s literary legacy, it’s got Jon Land’s fingerprints all over it. Which is to say that readers get their fill of Washington politics, power, and prestige along with a corker of a plot that’s as unputdownable as it is unsettling.” —Criminal Intent

Murder at the CDC rushes forward like a runway train. Its climax is both gripping and satisfying. Land’s in total control of an often violent, horrific, contemporary scenario that will leave you breathless.” —Providence Journal

Murder at the CDC does not let up. This modern tale of terror is sure to keep you up long into the night until the final page has been turned.” —Bookreporter

“This spine-tingling thriller showcases political intrigue at its finest.” —Novels Alive

Murder at the CDC grips you from the chilling first chapter and doesn’t let go until the resolution of the story as you try to crack the conspiracy from different angles alongside the protagonists.” —Best Thriller Books

“Land's deft hand at characterization gives gravity to this superb entry, and the sharp-witted dialogue between good and bad characters is solid. Not one word is out of place. He weaves timely political and environmental issues like the coronavirus throughout the story, seamlessly and without being preachy. No filler—all action.” —Press-Republican

“Brimming with action and terrifying suspense, Murder at the CDC takes a hard look at a divided nation and examines the consequences when rhetoric and lies spiral out of control. An entertaining thriller with all the clues to solve and heart-thumping action Margaret Truman fans demand and deserve.” —BookTrib

“How can a missing tanker truck, a hole in a purse, a man who lives totally off the grid, an evangelical preacher, and a man in a Panama hat all weave into a heart stopping, hold your breath thriller? This is Land's best book by far.” —Kings River Life Magazine

Praise for Murder on the Metro

“Murder on the Metro starts with a bang and keeps on going at breakneck speed.” —Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author
