Overview

For the better part of the 20th century, the communities of Bassett, Fieldale, and Stanleytown, Virginia benefitted from a unique form of law enforcement as the industries in those areas created police departments for their towns that was totally independent from local government. As the industries began leaving these communities, so did these police departments. This is the history of those departments and the men who served them.

About the Author

Ron Stowe spent his early years growing up in Stanleytown. VA where his dad Melvin was the longtime chief of police. In true small town fashion, he was able to spend much of his formative years hanging around the police station with his dad (just like Opie and Andy in Mayberry) and other officers who he grew to admire as he listened to their stories and frivolity, which were filled with much wisdom.
After graduating from J.D. Bassett High School, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University, then graduated from Danville Community College with a degree in Police Science. Graduating from DCC on a Saturday morning, he began working as a deputy sheriff with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department that very night. His career later took him to the High Point, North Carolina Police Department, during which time he received a BS Degree from Gardner Webb University, attended the FBI National Academy, and rose to the rank of Captain. He retired from High Point PD after 27 years of service, and was then the Public Safety Director at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC for an additional eight years.
He has had articles published in professional journals, authored a weekly column titled “On the Beat” published in the High Point Enterprise, and has one previously published book titled “Life is More Than a Box of Doughnuts.”
Ron and his wife, Debbie have two children and nine grandchildren, and live in High Point, NC
