Warning that his reference is provisional, Jones (U. of London) aims to show that German lexicography reached a high level of quality and quantity during the 17th century, and was highly international in character, influenced by efforts in Italy, France, and the Low Countries. Indeed few of the 1,150 dictionaries he cites are monoglot German, and in some German is not even the primary concern. The first section is devoted to anonymous works. The second lists authors and their known or reported editions, usually in chronological order, though very well known editions are sometimes listed first. He marks those he has not seen personally or has seen only in reproductions. He indexes languages, classified dictionaries, publishers and printers, and titles. Annotation c.
