A new pictorial history book looking at the communities of Gering, Scottsbluff and Terrytown will be available May 11 at the North Platte Valley Museum.
Gering, Scottsbluff and Terrytown is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series that has chronicled communities in every state.
Information for the 128-page, 5-chapter books was compiled by the museum's collections committee that divided up the complex task of sifting through volumes of information and sorting through stacks and stacks of images.
Each of the chapters, Gering, Scottsbluff, Terrytown, Agriculture, and Area Landmarks contains many historical images and a brief history signifying the importance played in the development of the communities.
Barb Netherland, director of the North Platte Valley Museum, said pre-sales of the book at $18.19 went well which allowed the museum the opportunity to amass enough financing to print a 1,000 of the books.
"The publisher generally likes to do one town or an entire county, so the biggest thing we had to do was to convince them that it would not work to break up the cities,' Netherland said. "We just didn't want to split up the three cities."
Netherland said Arcadia contacted the museum several times about the book, but the timing was just not right. "We started some telephone communications and then we saw a copy of the Grand Island book," she said.
The museum's collections committee has been writing historical stories for the Courier and Star-Herald. "All of us love to do research," Netherland said. "Our history here is so awesome."
The committee was divided into groups to work on the five chapters and began gleaning the information to some manageable plan.
"We had great pictures," Netherland said.
"But, not enough room for them all," chimed in Eleanor Shimek a member of the collection's committee.
Profits from the book, which will be available May 11 at a cost of $21.99, will benefit the museum.
Many of the images used are from the NPV Historical Association, and members of the community provided others. Several of the images are the work of pioneer photographers O.W. Simmons and H.A. Mark.
The book will be available in area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888) 312665.
Arcadia Publishing was launched in Dover, N.H. in 1993 as a small publisher of local history.
Arcadia is best known for its popular Images of America series, which chronicles the history of communities from Bangor, Maine to Manhattan Beach, Calif.
