Description: This book in the Fast Facts series describes bullying and incivility in nursing, how it affects various aspects of nursing, and how to counter it.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a "field guide" to bullying and incivility. The author defines the bullying and discusses ways to deal with this behavior. The main purpose is to make all nurses aware of the problem and give examples of how to effectively deal with it. The book meets these very worthy and necessary objectives.
Audience: The audience includes all nurses, whether nursing students, new or experienced nurses, or nurses in administration and nursing education.
Features: The book covers the concept of bullying, addressing these behaviors, outcomes, and the effect on healthcare. The author also discusses the law as it pertains to bullying and then offers case studies of bullying with nursing students and novice nurses. Each chapter includes objectives, fast facts on that material, and highlights. The book is quick, easy to follow, and very thorough.
Assessment: This book is wonderful — a necessary and great addition for any nurse. The author is so correct that bullying and incivility can occur anywhere. It is vitally important for nurses to recognize these behaviors and address them, not perpetuate the problem. I love that she includes nursing students because so often they are left out of this conversation. Great job!
