Written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve (Things to Come), One Fine Morning is a heartbreaking story of family obligations and the pressures faced as a parent ages. It is also a deeply meaningful commentary about identity and love. Sandra is a widow in Paris who lives a busy life caring for her daughter. Her father suffers from a degenerative disease, so she must find a care facility for him. Between this and taking care of her daughter, she has little time for herself. She constantly pushes away her personal desires for the needs of her family. In a chance encounter, she runs into her deceased husband's friend Clement, and their new friendship blossoms into an on-again-off-again affair. Their spark is undeniable, and Sandra has a sexual reawakening. Léa Seydoux, who American audiences will recognize from Midnight in Paris and the James Bond franchise (Spectre; No Time to Die), plays Sandra, and her performance is fantastic. Here, she brings an unglamorized character to the screen, becoming a down-to-earth single mother that viewers can relate to. Pascal Greggory (La Vie en Rose) plays her father, Georg. Greggory eeks pathos from the role as his character's disease is causing him to go blind. He worries about where his books will end up. It's devastating. Melvil Poupaud (The Young Lovers) plays Clement, who delivers considerable romance. The design aspects of the production enhance Clement's performance. The director has chosen to shoot on 35mm, which not only gives the film a softer look but attempts, with its frailty and tracking shots from Denis Lenoir, to rid the audience of judgment about the affair. It is effective, and the film looks beautiful. Coupled with the excellent performances, it is a delicately balanced cinematic pleasure. The pressure Sandra is under in "One Fine Morning" may be easy for moviegoers to identify with in a busy world of sports, carpools, and aging parents. The director manages to create an affair that feels guilty and yet is something the audience finds itself rooting for. In some ways, viewers could walk out of the movie theater with their own sense of loneliness and longing. This is due to Mia Hansen- Løve's ability to get her audience to entangle their emotions with that of the protagonist, making a lasting imprint, long after the credits roll. Its running time is 112 minutes, just about right for a film of this depth. One Fine Morning is one fine film.
