INTRODUCTION: Lost Words
It's been seventeen years, and my son, Kolton, has never spoken one word to me. All I've ever wanted to hear him say is "Daddy" and "I love you." I surround him with conversation every day, desperately waiting for him to speak or even babble words back to me. His mother, Angie, is always playing music in the house and singing to him. Kolton loves music, and I can see that they both love every second of listening to a song together.
I vocalize my strengths into my son. Sometimes I whisper things in his ear like "I love you," "You're Daddy's boy," and "I'm so proud of you." I wonder if he really understands me, or if he is able to absorb and remember my words. We have our own way of communicating, mostly through facial expressions, emotions, and other nonverbal communication that I like to call "Kolton's way." Our normal isn't like other families' normal, but I think my son understands me. Even if he doesn't verbally answer me, when I communicate with him, he gets a great big, amazing smile on his face, and he will look at me, his mom, brothers, teachers, friends and family. When their names are called or during conversation, he makes eye contact and just stares at us, smiling and listening to everything we say.
If Kolton could talk like the rest of us—if we could just find a way for him to get the words out—I know he would have a lot to say. It would change his life and ours if we were able to really talk or communicate with him, in a real conversation.

About the Author

PREFACE
My name is Roger D. Hines II and I’m CPDAD. I’m thirty-nine years old. My roots are in Casstown and Troy, Ohio, a tiny village and small city in rural southwest Ohio, about an hour west of Columbus. I haven’t accomplished anything really great in my life. The best thing I’ve done, at least on paper, is graduate from high school and become a star football player on Friday nights. I also thrive on being the best special needs parent I can. I wrote this book because I live an ordinary—and yet unique— life, as the father of a son with cerebral palsy (CP).
I didn’t come from a wealthy family. My dad and mom worked hard my entire life to support my brother and I. My parents divorced when I was fourteen years old. I wasn't the best student in school; I did what I had to just to get by most of the time. It's not that I didn't like school, or that the school system failed me. I think I have just always been an entrepreneur, and I preferred to teach myself things, instead of learning things in a classroom. That’s part of the reason I’m writing this book. I want to share some of the obstacles we have faced and to use my family’s story to educate, influence, and inspire other special needs parents like us. I want to guide others in similar situations and show the way we do things with our son and the ways we have been successful in caring for him.
I have a beautiful family of five, and I love my life. Even though it’s hard, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
