About the Author

Author, comedian, community organizer, influencer,, and poet Azizi Jasper is a dynamic performer and a passionate voice for social justice, literary arts, and Pan Africanism. He has shared the stage along-side a who’s who of influencers including the great poet Gil Scott Heron, Marvin Sapp, Slum Village, Saul Williams, & Min. Louis Farrakhan to name a few. His presentations are lively, powerful, and thought provoking, leaving listeners amazed with a potent mixture of content and wordplay.


Jasper has been featured alongside former Grand Rapids poet laureates in the acclaimed compilation “Song of the Owashtanong” (Also Avail on Amazon). He is the founder of several open mic series spanning from his native Grand Rapids, including the longest running spoken word open mic in W. MI, Smokin Spoken Word.

Jasper one of the founding members of the poetry collective “The Diatribe” as well as one of the hosts of what was the largest weekly open mic set in Detroit (The Retort).

He’s also serves as host and curator of The Neo Grio Open Mic Series at the world famous Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe as well as his latest venture entitled “Art in a Fly Space”, an outdoor show at Detroit Shipping Company.

Azizi has also worked in Detroit as a social worker for Alkebulan Village, helping teens 13-17 y/o navigate through troubling circumstances.

He is also a political organizer having assisted on more than 30 regional campaigns, and is the curator of over 50 community-based events.

“I enjoy writing about the troubles of my generation” said Jasper, “but not nearly as much as I like working to change them”.
