With this casebook, students have the opportunity to apply finance principles and concepts to settings that simulate actual work environments. In that way, the book allows instructors to create a bridge between academic learning and applied practice.

Each of the 32 finance cases presents a scenario and relevant background on a healthcare organization and poses a financial management issue that students must analyze in order to recommend appropriate courses of action. The majority of cases are accompanied by spreadsheet models to help students perform the required analyses.

The casebook also contains seven qualitative mini-cases created to highlight the ethical dilemmas that occasionally arise in the practice of healthcare finance.

About the Author

Louis C. Gapenski, PhD, is a professor of health services administration with a specialization in corporate and healthcare finance at the University of Florida. He is the author of 30 textbooks, which are used worldwide and include Canadian and international editions as well as translations in eight languages. He has published 40 journal articles related to corporate and healthcare finance and is active in several professional associations.

Strong theoretical protocols are presented with a textbook approach to sample cases in healthcare finance. The purpose is to provide MBA students with a realistic thought process so that they can consider the myriad of data elements prior to drawing conclusions and choosing a specific course of action. This book is geared to the MBA student. A strong theoretical framework for understanding healthcare organization finance is presented. The practical aspects of "real-life" scenarios can provide additional insight and value, however, to the theoretical approach utilized in this book. For example, the section "Assessing Hospital Performance" is focused on hospital performance through ratio analysis. While the ratio analysis approach is theoretically sound, one must fully understand the reasons why these ratios do not fall within predefined guidelines (e.g., problems with a managed care payer, difficulty in all parties understanding contractual language, payment disputes, staffing inefficiencies, employee morale issues, staffing shortages, lack of consigned products, etc.). Furthermore, given the current financial problems of the hospital industry, careful attention must be given to the setting and circumstances under which hospitals are being compared. If possible, this book should be combined with parallel student projects with local hospitals to better prepare the student for entry into healthcare finance.
