Gr 5-6-These slim biographies, although a bit flat and dry, manage to introduce their subjects' lives adequately, while explaining the historical role each man played. Further, the authors handle sensitive issues, such as why Arnold chose to become a traitor, in a factual manner. Aldridge briefly explains Jefferson's romantic relationship with Sally Hemings, adding present-day ramifications of that relationship. While the writing is accessible, some of the concepts considered require the sophistication or knowledge of older students. For example, Jefferson makes reference to the Enlightenment and the work of John Locke, Francis Bacon, and Sir Isaac Newton.
