Description: This basic guide for interpreting histology slides contains illustrations of histology slides with accompanying micrographs and long descriptions in easy-to-understand language. The new edition features higher quality images and new diagrams. The accompanying website contains an ebook version, a question bank, and additional images. These features provide multiple ways for students to assess their progress.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide professional students with a colorful and expanded atlas of histology. Presenting the book in print and an online format adds value to its function as an educational tool, providing a print book to read and analyze along with extra content and questions online.
Audience: The author's intended audience is medical, veterinary, dentistry, pathology, and biological science students. This would be useful as a supplementary atlas, but I would not recommend using it as a standalone book for an upper level course. It reads at the level of an undergraduate course and does not contain the molecular biology information covered in professional and graduate school. However, it is valuable as an introductory book for students learning histology for the first time. The author is a professor emeritus from the University of Idaho.
Features: The book presents histological illustrations followed by micrographs covering histology methods, cell structure, tissues, and organ systems with descriptions for each slide. This format guides readers through interpreting slides with comprehensible language. Additional images and a summary end each chapter. The summary is in a bullet-point format that is clear and concise. The spinal cord is presented at multiple levels, allowing students to compare its structure in different regions of the body. There could be more information about the biochemistry and specific functions of the cells. The mesentery and peripheral mechanoreceptors are mentioned but could be described in higher detail.
Assessment: The structure and language of this book make it less overwhelming to students learning histology for the first time. It does not cover molecular and cell biology as a comparable book does (Histology: A Text and Atlas with Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology, 7th edition, Ross and Pawlina (Wolters Kluwer, 2016)), making it more suitable for introductory courses. This book alone would not be sufficient for graduate or professional students.
