Launch Sample
A Kind of StoryRand O'Malley dreams of superstardom. He hopes to one day sing the blues like a rock god. Moving to New York City and hiring a new manager are steps to make his dreams a reality. But nothing moves as fast as Rand would like, and everyone has opinions, for example that he should keep certain pieces of himself quiet if he plans on making it in the Big Apple. Like his bisexuality. Will Sanders is a gifted musician who dazzles Rand with his ability to coax gorgeous notes from an electric guitar one moment and play the piano like a professional the next. He's a geek, but Rand isn't concerned about Will's pressed exterior clashing with his tattoos. His focus is music. Yet there's something about Will that makes Rand think there's much more to the quiet college student than he lets on. As Rand's dreams begin to materialize, he's forced to reconsider his priorities and find his own kind of truth. One that might include Will.

4.5 Stars ~ "Maybe it was all in my head, but I swear I could feel it. A pulse, a beat, an upswing in tempo. Something was driving me to keep moving, keep trying. I had a dream, and instinctively I knew this was where it would begin." I've always had a lot of respect, and an equal amount of awe, for the people who do everything in their power to make their dream come true. Regardless of what type of dream - actor, dancer, rock star, model, business owner, etc. - the ones who succeed do so because of determination, strength, and the sheer will to be the best that they can be. 'A Kind of Truth' shows that drive and energy in more ways than one. Rand interested me right from the start. The fact that he's one of those people who likes to push other people's buttons just to see what might happen had me hooked. Well, that and his overall impatience and ability to say exactly what was on his mind. Plus, Rand knows his strengths and weaknesses, and how to discipline himself and create boundaries to keep him going in the direction he wants. Not many people have that strength of character so it was another piece of the puzzle that endeared him to me. To be completely honest, what initially attracted me to William was how much he reminded me of my husband in the fact that William is a band geek, a music nerd. Will's loneliness, his shyness, his insecurities (about everything except music), just made me like him even more. Especially after realizing his family is a very right-wing leaning crowd where his being gay is simply not discussed, leaving Will even more alone in the world. There is a lot more to Will than meets the eye, though. A lot more. There's a dichotomy and a duality to Will that grabbed me just as much as it did Rand. "He bit his bottom lip and flopped onto his back. “Rand, this is too weird for me. I don’t get you, and I don’t know how to explain me.” It's a very good thing that Rand has his head on straight, no pun intended, when it comes to what he wants for himself and the band. There can be so many distractions to up-and-comers that send them reeling from their goals. The only thing that was sending Rand reeling was Will, and his feelings for him. Until Will reveals a few more of his secrets and suddenly life isn't so simple, or black and white. For either of them. “What’s the unpleasant part?” “The truth. I love you.” That sounded promising. I tried a smile but something told me I wasn’t out of the woods. “Then why—?” “We won’t work. You’ll never be able to put me first. I can’t trust that you feel the same way about me, and honestly… I’m not sure I trust you. Nobody gets everything they want without sacrificing something.” A truly mesmerizing novel. It was beautiful, sad, lonely, hopeful, aggressive, raucous, betrayed, and filled with the kind of love you only get once in a lifetime. If you're lucky.
