Overview

This book traces the life and works of two artists, Elijah Sylvester Newton Cawthorne (1844 - 1913) and his son Frederick Charles Cawthorne (1877 - 1940) who lived in Clitheroe, Lancashire. The Cawthorne artists are well-known in the area around Clitheroe. Many of their paintings were purchased originally from the artists directly, and have since been passed on by descent within families. Their works do not appear at auction very often, but it is likely there are many surviving examples of their work.

The book includes 14 examples of their work, and considers their contribution to art history as local professional artists.
