Gr 7 Up--The focus of this series is pregnancy prevention and this author states his case in a lecturing tone and with a "just say no" mentality. He provides information about contraception and sexually transmitted disease but doesn't take into account the power of community norms or the context of poverty that researchers say causes much teenage pregnancy. While the title is fairly provocative, it is not truly descriptive of the contents. This book is really about getting readers to buy a prescribed set of values, behaviors, and expectations on the basis of Jamiolkowski's authority as author. It is difficult to understand why readers would just accept his definition of "What It Really Means to Be a Man" and choose on the basis of this text to try to live up to this yardstick of maturity. The photographs and layout are of average quality. A short list of organizations is provided, but no advice is given on whom to call for what. While there are few books on sexual ethics for young people, Wardell Pomeroy's Boys and Sex (Dell, 1991) does a much better job of helping young men understand their sexuality and motivations without attacking them for being immature.--Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA
