About the Author

John Henry Parsley was born in 1896 and died in 1968. He and his wife Emma were share croppers, farming another man's land in the river bottoms of the Wabash River near Merom, Indiana in the early 1900s. He struggled with his conscience about being drafted into the ongoing war in France. He did not want to kill anyone. He decided to enlist in a newly formed Railroad Engineers Unit of the Army in hopes of avoiding the battlefields of France. His story is truly a remarkable story of bravery and survival.
