E. Lockhart Gives Us a Sneak Peek at the We Were Liars Deluxe Edition

In 2014 E. Lockhart’s twisty, gut-punch thriller We Were Liars became the YA answer to Gone Girl (with approximately 5,000% more tears), boasting a reveal that inspired readers to turn right back to the first page as soon as they were done with the last. It’s the story of a girl, Cady, returning to the family island where she spent her cosseted childhood summers, growing up alongside her two beloved cousins and best friend–turned–love interest Gat—the four of them collectively known as the Liars. She’s back after two years away to uncover the secrets behind her splintered memories, her excruciating headaches, and the painful transformation that has made her a stranger to herself since her last halcyon summer. This year marks the release of a deluxe edition of the instant classic, including a new cover and a boatload of extras for readers longing for more. Here’s Lockhart to share a sneak peek at what’s inside.

The cover of the We Were Liars Deluxe Edition is ghostly and fiery. It’s the original sunlit jacket reinvented for people who have read the novel already. I love the redesign, because I think it invites people to experience the book a second time. What’s inside?
Love letters. In putting together extras for the Deluxe Edition, I wanted to give my readers what they ask for most: more of the love story between Gat and Cady. Gat is not always an easy person to be in love with. He’s pretty difficult, in fact. But he does put his emotions on paper, which is an awesome quality in a boyfriend, and writing additional love letters from him to Cadence was a pleasure. I like knowing she has those to hold on to.
Behind-the-scenes insights. For this edition, I also wanted to open up the process of writing the book a bit—though to be honest, the process of writing any book is something of a mystery to me. I shared with my readers a section of the book proposal. In it you can see early ideas for the novel, including the original title, Johnny’s original name, and the reason the four Liars are called Liars. I also revealed my original hand-drawn map of Beechwood Island and included a bunch of notes I wrote to myself during the revision process.
Snacks and conversation starters. I wanted to offer ways to share the book with friends—or with students if you’re a teacher or librarian. To that end, there are discussion questions, recipes to make for book club meetings, and links to buy Sinclair-style foods, including the actual fudge Gat likes so much. (Warning: it is lethal.) I love to cook, and writing the foodie parts ofWe Were Liars was very fun for me. I actually use these recipes, including one for an amazing salad dressing.
