The hero of the novel is police officer Alan Grant, who, being temporarily bedridden, investigates the murder of the nephews of the English king Richard III. Grant, who was fond of the fact that photographs could tell a lot about a person's character, decided to study reproductions from portraits of people with whom some kind of secret was brought by his girlfriend, Martha Hallard. Among them, he is attracted by the image of King Richard III, who is known in history as a villain, tyrant, despot and murderer of his nephews, Princes Edward and Richard.
