Overview

While serving in the USO during WWII, Mumma meets Pops. She's got many suitors, but it's Pops who wins her heart. Their road is rocky though: his family sees his marriage to an orphan as beneath him and her own dreams of being more than just a wife and mother are jeopardized. But while Mumma never counted on there being challenges at every turn, those turns also never anticipated a force of nature like Mumma. Over the next fifty years, she raises four daughters, and they see her as everything from pig-headed to loving. Through their eyes, acclaimed author Cynthia Voigt paints a gorgeous portrait of Mumma in all her complexity and uses it to explore the intense, spirited connection between mothers and daughters.

Voigt is a master of pure story.” —Kirkus

JULY 2017 - AudioFile

Fans of Cynthia Voigt, the Newberry Award-winning author of HOMECOMING and DICEY'S SONG, will welcome her venture into grown-up territory. Katherine Fenton’s spirited narration gives zip to the indomitable central figure, Elfrieda “Rida” Smith. While trying to put some order to her chaotic family history, Rida’s youngest daughter—she has four, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—discovers that their mother was an orphan, abandoned at a California convent school. Further research reveals that brassy, avante-garde Rida danced with the USO overseas during WWII, where she met their father, the scion of an established Boston family. While Fenton’s enthusiasm occasionally grows shrill, she handles the narrative without theatrics. Her narration is mostly appealing as the predictable plot unfolds and people of various classes clash. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
