About the Author

JANET WOLLUM is the author of the first edition of Outstanding Women Athletes: Who They Are and How They Influenced Sports in America. She holds a master of arts degree in womens history from Arizona State University and has been researching and writing on the history of women in sports for more than a decade. Woolum was a member of the 1995 U.S. National Bowling Team and is an Olympic Festival gold medalist.

Now in its second edition, this resource on women athletes by historian Woolum is organized into three parts: history, biographies of individual athletes and teams, and resources/appendixes. Criteria for inclusion, new to this edition, are women who have won titles in major events and "had a significant impact on sports in America," thus allowing for the inclusion of such athletes as Monica Seles and Manon Rheaume. Excluding the index (unseen), this edition adds 125 pages to the 1992 book. The historical section not only updates the chronology but is also rewritten to be clearer and to expand information on African Americans and some sports. Twenty-six athletes have been added to the bibliographical section, for a total of 86, and the chapter on teams is entirely new and includes Olympic gold medal teams. The resources section contains lists of organizations and books by sport, while the appendixes list female winners: Olympic gold medalists through 1998, national champions, and NCAA Division I champions. Most holdover biographies have been revised and/or updated, and nearly all include books for further reading. Clearly and entertainingly written, this book successfully escapes a mind-numbing recitation of achievements. Gr 5 Up-Woolum discusses the history of women's sports, provides overviews of athletes and teams, includes a sport-by-sport annotated bibliography, and offers appendixes full of statistics. This edition features much more information than the original (1992) and captures many of the recent advances that women have made in the sports world. In addition to 26 new biographies, the author has added a chapter on outstanding teams, including the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team, and the 1945 Rockford Peaches (the team portrayed in the movie A League of Their Own). Most of the black-and-white photographs appeared in the previous edition. There are a few shortcomings. Woolum states that Babe Zaharias "...bore the brunt of the stereotypes and prejudices many women athletes faced during this era of American women's sports," but does not elaborate on what these stereotypes and prejudices were or the impact that they had. Also, the columns are reversed in the entry on Evelyn Ashford. Encyclopedia of Women and Sport in America (Oryx, 1998) covers much of the same material. The national champions featured in this update of the 1991 edition erode the results of a 1985 Miller Lite/Women's Sports Foundation survey indicating a lack of role models as a barrier to women's participation in sports. Revisions by Woolum, a member of the 1995 US National Bowling Team, include biographies and data extended through 1997, descriptions of recent Olympic Games, and reflections on the 25th anniversary of the Title IX amendment outlawing discrimination in federally-funded education programs.
