Overview

When her mother dies, Nontle Ntlungu is taken by her aunt to go stay with her and her husband in Cape Town. The joy of living in a big city turns sour when she is raped by her uncle, Mzingisi. After a fight with her aunt who does not believe Nontle, she has no option but to leave and stay with her friend who soon introduces her to prostitution. Literally translated, the title of the book means, The pain of having torture heaped upon torture and this is what happens to 16 year-old Nontle. She feels there is this unseen hand that follows her and dangles a hot ash on her back at every turn.
