Overview

This book by renowned Professor of German History, Chester Verne Easum, which was first published in 1942, is devoted to Prince Henry, the younger brother of Prussia’s Frederick the Great. Frederick Henry Louis (1726-1802), commonly known as Henry (Heinrich) also served as a general and statesman, leading Prussian armies in the Silesian Wars and the Seven Years’ War, in which he did not lose a single battle.

“The man principally responsible for the achievements of Frederick II of Prussia was Frederick himself. No one else earned for him the title of “Frederick the Great,” Friedrich der Einzige, or “Old Fritz.” Yet he owed much of his success to the work of his predecessors, particularly the Great Elector and Frederick William I, and much to the help his brother Henry gave him. As the rather obscure figure of the younger brother emerges from the shadow of the throne only as the light of investigation is thrown upon it, so Frederick himself takes on a new and in some ways more attractive appearance as his character is more fully revealed by the study of his relationship with Henry. Far from being discredited, he gains more than he loses as a result of this renewed scrutiny. So does Henry.”

About the Author

Chester Verne Easum (March 30, 1894 - December 28, 1979) was a Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, historian and author.

He was born in Clayton, Illinois in 1894 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College in 1914. Following graduation, he served as both principal and United States History teacher at Knoxville High School, Illinois between 1914 and 1915. In 1916, he traveled to England to study at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. His studies were interrupted by the United States’ entry into World War I, and he began service in the American Expeditionary Force and Army of Occupation as a combat infantry officer, in addition to being an army school instructor.

Following the war, he received his second Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s degree from Oxford University and then returned to America to accept a position as a United States and Modern European History instructor at the Culver Military Academy in Indiana. In 1927, Easum attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Ph.D. candidate, receiving his degree in 1928. His scholarly interests were concentrated in German history and the history of World War I and World War II.

Easum joined the University of Wisconsin’s history department as assistant professor in 1930, later becoming Professor of History Emeritus, where he remained until his retirement in 1964. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in German and Eastern European History in 1953 and passed away in Madison, Wisconsin in 1979, aged 85.
