About the Author

James Langford is Director Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame Press, a member of the Core Course faculty at Notre Dame and President of There Are Children Here, a camp for inner city children. Among his eight books are Galileo, Science and the Church and Happy Are They: Living the Beatitudes in America. Leroy S. Rouner is professor of philosophy, religion and philosophical theology and Director of the Institute for Philosophy and Religion at Boston University. He is author of Within Human Experience: The Philosophy of William Ernest Hocking, The Long Way Home (a memoir), and To Be at Home: Christianity, Civil Religion, and Human Community.

This collection of essays was solicited and written in the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, and its contributors range from the truly eminent to the merely famous-Frederick Buechner, William Sloane Coffin, Karen Armstrong, Stanley Hauerwas, and others. There has been no shortage of talk, after the attack, and readers may well not find great novelties here-expressions of dismay, admissions of human littleness, vows of reform, and affirmations of renewed faith have become a familiar part of our discourse. Yet there is value in the care with which these experienced writers have assayed their (and our) views, and value in the multiplicity of religious perspectives that inform the whole of the collection.
