About the Author

Dr. Ted O'Connell is a family physician, educator, author, innovator, and speaker. He served as the founding director of Kaiser Permanente’s Napa-Solano family medicine residency program and serves as a clinical professor for UC San Francisco, UC Davis, and Drexel University’s schools of medicine. He also founded Kaiser’s community medicine and global health fellowship. has authored or edited over a dozen textbooks, written numerous textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles. Among his most notable are USMLE Step 2 Secrets, USMLE Step 3 Secrets, Crush Step 1, and the Instant Workups series of books. He is the Editor-In-Chief for Elsevier’s Clinical Key Meded education platform.

Description: This book is a USMLE Step 1 aid that facilitates learning of foundational disciplines. Each chapter begins with an outline of basic concepts, followed by short clinical vignettes, question-and-answer sections, or both. Its design promotes understanding, not memorization, of critical concepts of foundational science. The book comes with a code for an ebook with options to browse and search content virtually. The previous edition was published in 2016.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to supplement the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1, 2nd Edition, Le, et. al. (McGraw Hill, 2022). Its focus is to aid understanding of the information and concepts, rather than memorizing facts. This learning approach should decrease learners' anxiety and provide a solid foundation for their future medical career. Having both print and online formats improves the flexibility of usage, and thus adds convenience and value. The construct of the book (e.g., use of clinical vignettes and question-and-answer format) addresses the objectives to promote understanding not memorization.
Audience: Students preparing for the USMLE Step 1 exam can use this book. In addition, medical educators can use the construct to develop their teaching sessions, such as integrated application-based teaching sessions. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors and editors include both MDs and MD candidates from various medical schools who, based on their credentials, are credible authorities in medical education.
Features: Although the book does not provide information on every single clinical condition, it uses the most common conditions to discuss foundational knowledge. It also provides a Step 1 insider's guide and high yield points as well as clinical pearls. In short, the book's design promotes a step-by-step thought process in learning and consolidating foundational knowledge. There are sufficient images, yet some of photos of patient presentations are in black-and-white so features are not very distinguishable.
Assessment: In general, the book is very easy to follow and promotes thinking rather than memorization of facts. The book's construct is well thought through to promote critical thinking and application of foundational knowledge to clinical scenarios.
