Description: Derived from the current edition of Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 8th edition, Tintinalli et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2016), this pocket manual covers the major topics in emergency medicine. The previous edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a reference for the daily needs of those providing emergency care. The book upon which it is based is arguably one of the most expansive and complete references in emergency medicine. The goal of the authors of this manual is to provide a more approachable and pocket-sized version for easier reference. The authors are successful in condensing and organizing a large amount of information in a relatively small and easily referenced book.
Audience: The intended audience is broad, including medical students, residents, advanced practice providers, and practicing emergency physicians. The book is written by a large group of physicians from around the world with broad training and practice backgrounds, many of whom are in subspecialty areas of emergency medicine.
Features: The book's 23 sections and 189 chapters are organized by body systems and by major subtopics (i.e. trauma, anesthesia, pediatrics, toxicology, environmental, and palliative care). It discusses both big picture and more nuanced presentations and diseases seen in emergency medicine. All of the topics are clearly organized by either body system or subtopic, allowing for easy and quick reference. Numerous supporting pictures, tables, and figures highlight key pathology and algorithms. Chapters end with reference to further reading available in the main textbook.
Assessment: This is a concise and nicely condensed version of the main textbook, but it does lack the in-depth discussion providers may need on certain topics. The references at the end of each chapter offer opportunities for further reading, but the expectation would seem to be that if readers own this manual that they also own the textbook. There is nothing particularly groundbreaking here that can't easily be found in other books on emergency medicine, but this title does carry with it the weight of the name Tintinalli's associated with it. I would recommend it to providers who value portability and conciseness, but new learners or those looking for complete and thorough discussions may want to stick with the main textbook.
