Overview

Magicians and swordsmen in Larry Niven's exciting "pre-history" world fight constantly, with magicians usually gaining the upper hand, and magicians often struggle for power amongst themselves.

Mana, the ultimate source of magic, has been depleted, a nonrenewable energy source, as the ancient gods die. In this tale of linked stories, the Warlock fights a swordsman, a werewolf, demons and fellow magicians. Together with a colorful band that includes a haunted Greek swordsman, a beautiful witch-sorceress, and the talking skull of a former enemy magician, the Warlock travels around the world, from what is now California to Scandinavia and to the Alps, to seek the last living god in his hidden cave, the god of love and madness.
