The initial chapters discuss topics such as developing a therapeutic alliance during a diagnostic exam and how DSM-5-TR impacts the diagnostic exam. The DSM-5-TR diagnostic interview section includes the diagnosis and example questions to ask during a patient interview. This is an updated version of The Pocket Guide to the DSM-5 Diagnostic Exam, Nussbaum (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Purpose: The book was designed to be utilized in conjunction with the DSM-5-TR for the diagnostic exam for beginner or experienced interviewers. The beginning of the book stresses the importance of a therapeutic alliance and the well-being of the people we meet as the reason for the diagnostic exam. The main focus of the book is to have a DSM-5-TR class with criteria and then provide example questions and follow-up questions that allow for open-ended questioning and to facilitate building a therapeutic alliance with patients. This could involve screening questions for a category and then follow-up questions for specific inclusion criteria.
Audience: This book identifies its audience for novice and seasoned interviewers who are going to carry out a diagnostic interview for a diagnosis utilizing the DSM-5-TR. It provides various open-ended questions that may not be familiar to interviewers of all skill levels in hopes to lead to improved interviews, build a therapeutic alliance with patients, and lead to improvement in diagnosis of those experiencing mental distress.

This can be used as a quick reference to review criteria and questions in order to lead to an improved diagnostic exam for people experiencing mental distress.
