DAN SMITH is the secretary general of the London-based international peace-building organization International Alert, and former Director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO). He was awarded the OBE in 2002, and lives in London.

No slouch, Smith presents thoroughgoing history and analysis ranging from the Ottoman Empire to the most recent waves of violence, accompanying his discussions with helpful maps, graphics, and chronologies. Sounds like a book we could all use.
