Hill spent a decade researching how the poor survive in a material world and subsequently identified the six poverty subpopulations (e.g., homeless children, the rural poor) that serve as the focus of this work. Introducing a merged set of problems with one voice in each chapter, these stories of people living in poverty (representing approximately 13 percent of all Americans) points out the need for a universal standard of basic needs for all human beings. Hill allows that each of the subgroups has variations and consequently supplies a list of additional reading material for each chapter.
