Description: This book details an approach to identifying various anatomical landmarks via ultrasound. It follows a consistent, bulleted pattern of listing transducer type, patient/examiner position, probe placement, bony landmarks, and target for each body region, as well as various additional tips and tricks. There are also illustrations for each landmark described.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to share the "tricks and techniques" of musculoskeletal ultrasound and to present them in a single resource. The objectives are worthy. While there are currently published texts about musculoskeletal ultrasound, some of which are used as references, this book provides a more concise breakdown of the more common anatomic landmarks. The book meets the objective of presenting scanning techniques. Notably, however, it does not delve into ultrasound-guided injection technique.
Audience: According to the authors, much of the book was taken from "a compilation of multiple lectures, discussions, and 'hands on' courses" intended for orthopedic residents. This book is useful for any individual who wishes to utilize musculoskeletal ultrasound to expand their practice (i.e., students, residents, fellows, attendings, licensed athletic trainers, physical and occupational therapists, ultrasound technologists, or advanced practice providers). This list would include practitioners from various specialties, including family practice, emergency medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatrics, internal medicine, and orthopedic surgery. The book does meet the needs of the intended audience in providing the basics, but this book can also be used in addition to other resources to provide a more comprehensive ultrasound education. The authors have extensive experience learning about and teaching musculoskeletal ultrasound. Dr. Bouffard has traveled around the world to educate and was "involved with one of the first medical school curriculums in musculoskeletal ultrasound at Wayne State University."
Features: The book starts by providing a brief overview of musculoskeletal ultrasound, including information about the physics of ultrasound as well as scanning techniques and terminology. The book then progresses from upper extremity structures to lower extremity and maintains a consistent pattern of describing recommended transducer, patient/examiner position, probe placement, bony acoustic landmarks, and target. There are detailed color illustrations for each body part described. Having color is especially helpful when looking at vascular structures. When appropriate, additional tips are provided. An index makes it easy to navigate through the book. The main area that is lacking in this resource is a discussion of ultrasound-guided injections. However, that could be a book in itself and does not appear to be within the scope of this source.
Assessment: Overall, this is a great resource for anyone interested in utilizing musculoskeletal ultrasound. The book provides enough detail to review the basics of both upper and lower extremity anatomical landmarks. The bulleted format makes it easy to read. While other books, like Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, 3rd Edition, Jacobson (Elsevier, 2017), are recommended for a more comprehensive overview, this book would be great to own in addition to that and to carry as a "pocket book" version.
