Overview

This academic research is conducted to examine the occupational safety and health induction program in enhancing safety awareness amongst fabrication workers. For that purpose, this study will be conducted within Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation (BDEWC), focusing on employees who are involved directly or indirectly with fabrication works. There were two main research methodologies applied, namely direct observation and personal survey using structured questionnaire forms. A number of 175 employees are targeted as respondents, which will cover the various sections within the abovementioned department. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 19.0 has been applied to conduct the entire analysis such as to generate descriptive analysis and inferential statistic. An expected result consists of the Cronbachs Alpha level for the overall constructs in this study should be above 0.700 and detail analysis of study findings as elaborated in Chapter IV. In-depth analysis such as Pearsons Coefficient, ANOVA and T-Test had been applied to answer the researchs aim and objectives, in addition to prove the acceptance level of researchs hypotheses. From the study findings, a number of recommendations were suggested to be adopted in line to enhance the organization productivity with greater safety working environment and excellent safety culture.

About the Author

Andrew Anak Ronggie obtained an Executive Master Degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management in 2011 from the Malaysia Technology University and graduated in Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from MARA Institute of Technology in 1985. Currently, he works as the Senior Manager for Loss Prevention Unit cum HSE Manager/Advisor with Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation having its Main Office in Kuching, Sarawak and its engineering and design office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He started his career as Engineering Assistant with Brooke Dockyard in 1985. In 1991, he joined Sarawak Shell Berhad in Lutong, Miri, Sarawak as multi-skilled Operations Technician and undergone various training and assignment at the onshore terminals and offshore platforms and barges in Sabah and Sarawak Waters. During the 5 years tenure with company, he attended various personal development and on the job internal/external technical training. He developed a passion in training and pursued his training competency with National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH), Malaysia, Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDC), Malaysia and Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Malaysia. He conducts various training programs, namely OHS Management System&Plan, Safety and Health Officer, Site Safety Supervisor, Safety and Health Committee, Incident Investigation, Work Place Inspection, Internal Audit, Emergency Response. He is responsible for adopting, implementing and monitoring an effective OSH management system in the corporation and implementing OSH program including OSH Induction Program. During his twenty (20) years tenure with the corporation, he leads the corporation to obtain the internationally recognised certification in OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Safety and Health Management System and ISO 14001 Environmentally Management System respectively. His unit is also responsible to maintain and sustain ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification for the corporation. Besides, he is also freelance trainer for OSH Module in diploma program in Open University, Polytechnic Kuching and conducted OSH awareness training for other State Corporations and nearby SMI/SMEs.
