About the Author

Bennita W. Vaughans, MSN, RN, currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Auburn University at Montgomery. She is employed as a Nursing Case Manager at a local hospital. Ms. Vaughans has been a nurse for 30 plus years and a nurse/allied health educator for over 20 years. She received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing and her master's degree in nursing from Troy University. Ms. Vaughans has experience in the area of quality and safety. She previously served as a Patient Safety Manager and Performance Improvement coordinator. Additionally, she previously served as a level chairperson and assistant dean at Tuskegee University. She has taught various courses at the baccalaureate, associate, and technical levels of nursing. She has also served as an instructor and coordinator in an allied health program. She has coauthored multiple nursing textbooks and has written several publications.

Jim Keogh, DNP, RN-BC, is an assistant professor at New York University and is on the faculty of St. Peter's University in jersey City, New Jersey. He is board-certified in psychiatric-mental health nursing and is the author of more than 87 books, including 20 nursing titles published by McGraw-Hill.


Jim Keogh is on the faculty of Columbia University teaching courses in its technology certification program. He has spent 15 years developing computer systems for major Wall Street firms such as Salomen, Inc. and Bear Stearns and has written several best-selling books for Prentice Hall and IDG.

Description: This book describes the fundamentals of nursing foundational information needed for nurses to complete their nursing curriculum at a later stage. It touches on a wide spectrum of the nursing profession from the history of nursing and nursing process to mental health and psychological needs in nursing. It describes the most critical concepts in nursing, which can be used as supplemental information to other foundational nursing books.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to facilitate students' understanding of the fundamentals of nursing information which may be new to many. The book meets its objectives by offering nursing information through a variety of ways such as tables, funny visual aids, NCLEX questions and color graphics. The book contains brief fast facts on the history of nursing, nursing process, health assessment, nutrition and some disease processes.
Audience: The intended audience is new student nurses, potential nurses and current nurses. The book is intended as a guide for the new nurses to learn the fundamentals of nursing and how to apply the acquired knowledge in future nursing curriculums. The authors are experienced instructors who command both academic and clinical knowledge of the nursing field from years of teaching nursing. They present expert topics on how to lead and teach nursing.
Features: The authors use scenarios, case studies, comics, and other graphics to assist readers to understand the different concepts presented. There are 18 chapters with appendices for different topics. Chapter 2 is a great chapter because it presents the nursing process in more detail which is foundational for the new nursing student. Adequate references, additional resources and NCLEX review questions are provided at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: This is a concise book for new nurses intending to learn about nursing. The book is full of color graphics which is good for the visual reader. However, the content appears not to be deep enough. But students can rely on this text to learn new terms and information in the nursing profession.
